    Roots of Steel characters ✓ 107 Roots of SteelWhat an interesting book The author traces the history of the steel mills in the area of Balti County abutting Balti the City MD known as Sparrows Point This history touches on so many topics unions race class immigration and US migration rise and fall of the US steel industry company towns education and all supported by an amazing amount of research Clearly the author is obsessed and one of the things I liked about this book among many things is how she also brings in the personal citing both her obsession and pulling in her own family history plus that of her children's father's family history I think the only thing I missed in this book and therein lies the one flaw of reading a book versus listening to a really good narrator is the Balti accent which I'm sure was present in spades in the many personal narratives from which she uotes
