mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed AmericaC'est la 3ème fois ue j'achète ce livre Les deux premières fois c'était sous forme papier Je l'ai prêté par deux fois j'en parlais avec tant d'enthousiasme ue cela faisait envie à des gens ui ne me l'ont pas renduCette fois ci sous forme électroniue je suis sure de le garder On apprend beaucoup de choses sur l'Amériue de la fin du 19ème j'étudie cela à l'université et cela fait prendre vie au cours théoriue De plus il y a du suspens avec le côté thriller ce ui ne gâte rien Pour mon 4ème voyage à Chicago je verrai un autre aspect de la ville surtout en imagination car beaucoup de choses ont disparu car les bâtiments de l'exposition universelle ont brûlé

mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed Americalivre de docu fiction très intéressant Le stress lié à la création de l'expo universelle de Chicago est palpable les noms cités sont ceux des participants à cette formidable épopée Chicago chauffée au charbon éclairée au gaz et construisant ses premiers gratte ciel impressionnant Pour ceux ui veulent lire en anglais pas de difficultés majeures dans le choix du vocabulaire ou la tournure des phrases Bref un régal

mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed AmericaThis book has a split personality It describes the heighth of human achievement and the depth of human depravity I learned of an exciting American achievement completed with the spirit of cooperation This story is gradually mixed with the story of a very scary criminal mind At the end I was informed but I wanted to hide under the bed

mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed AmericaIn 1893 Chicago was gearing up for its shining moment on the international stage The city had been selected to host the World's Fair beating out New York and a number of other American contenders A prominent local architect Daniel Burnham had taken the reins to organize and construct the massive project He assembled a dream team of architects landscapers engineers and other professionals to help pull the fair together Certainly Chicago could outdo the Paris Fair which had been a worldwide success years earlierUnfortunately for Burnham and his team everything that could go wrong did go wrong Due to a lack of organization and bickering among the committees responsible for the fair construction began far later than it should have Partially completed buildings blew over and burned down Union workers threatened strike

mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed AmericaI bought this book to read about HH Holmes but unfortunately the vast majority of it is about building the World's Fair It is well written and an interesting read but buy something else if you just want to read about HH Holmes

mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed AmericaThankyou for recommending this bookI found it fascinating Holmes' story is certainly worth telling but it was the story of the World's Fair that was the absorbing of the narrativesThe details of committee meetings labour disputes and even storm damage were deftly handled and the characters brought vividly to lifeI found Holmes' story was almost in the background and I feel this made for a better book than it might have been

mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed AmericaWhen Chicago won the right to hold the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 there was much sneering from the snobbish elite of New York and elsewhere at the idea of this brash dirty city best known as the home of slaughterhouses and pork packing factories being able to put on a show that would impress the world However brash though Chicago may have been it was also filled with go get

mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed AmericaAs always with Larson the pleasure is in the detail these little stories of history that hide behind the main tale the building of the great Exhibition and Burnham's challenges come alive and tbe birth of the Ferris Wheel or the success of Buffalo Bill as a showman are a real treat to the readeras for HH Holmes Larson has used what knowledge is available about the man and his sad endeavours without speculating further or sensationaling his deeds A fair story of the first serial killer understood as such in America and especially a good account of the detective who went out of his way to bring the truth about Holmes One wish Larson had developed it further Not as captivating as some of his other works but a good account of Chicago's life under the influence of these two very different men

mobi ☆ The Devil in the White City The Devil in the White City, Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed AmericaThis book is way about the world's fair than it is about HH HolmesIt literally dedicates space to writing about the conditions of the soil that the fair was to be built on and what other sites they looked at to find a site for the fair Honestly who cares Even if you are hugely curious about the fair most of it will send you to sleepThe stuff about HH Holmes is interesting but you're mostly
